Pearl and Earl, the dynamic American Buff duo, serve as flock guardians for the chickens and ducks here at Five Roots Farm. You'll usually find them mowing the grass and watching the fields and skies for danger.
Their protégés, Timothee and Theo, are Cotton Patch geese, a heritage breed listed as Threatened on the Livestock Conservancy's Conservation Priority List. We've been breeding Cotton Patch for the last year in hopes of nurturing a new generation of these once common geese. Subscribe to our newsletter for updates on gosling availability!

Are geese mean?
Geese get a bad rep in the temperament department. During breeding season, they can get feisty (particularly the males), but our geese have always been generally calm-natured. Some breeds are naturally more laid back than others. If they do get riled up, their hiss is often worse than their bite.
Are geese noisy?
Again, different breeds have different traits and some are noisier than others but, in our experience, all geese are noisy to some degree. As flock guardians, this is a benefit. To your neighbors, it could be an annoyance.
Can you eat goose eggs?
Absolutely! Being bigger than both chicken and duck eggs, goose eggs pack in more vitamins and are superior for baking and making pasta. Just be sure to adjust your recipe to account for their size.
