Egg Laying Extraordinaires
Ducks have been a part of Five Roots Farm from the very beginning. We started with a few Pekins and Welsh Harlequins in 2017 and have slowly grown to our current flock of primarily Indian Runners and Khaki Campbells. Our ducks free range a portion of our property with their own pond in exchange for some of the most nutritious eggs you'll ever eat, especially perfect for baking.
Chickens, often thought of as the "gateway livestock," are newer additions to the farm. We have a mixed flock of colorful egg layers and silk and satin silkies. We are currently building a breeding flock of Bielefelders, a dual-purpose breed we've found to be hardy and good-natured. Our chickens liven up the farm and play an important role in our pasture management system.

FAQ
What's the difference between chicken and duck eggs?
Duck eggs have a thicker shell, more protein and omega-3s, and are overall bigger than a chicken egg. Duck eggs are often used by professional bakers because their thicker whites result in fluffier bakes.
Can ducks and chickens be kept together?
Yes....with considerations. Ducks and chickens share some basic needs as poultry, but they also have key differences you'll need to factor in if you want to house them together. For example, chickens like to roost, ducks do not (except Muscovys). And obviously, both chickens and ducks need water, but ducks like to get in their water and need it for safe eating, while chickens just need to quench their thirst. We house our chickens and ducks separately at night, but they often forage together during the day.
Are all duck eggs white?
Chickens are known for laying a rainbow of egg colors, but ducks can lay pretty pastel eggs too! Depending on the breed, you can get bluish greens, off-whites, and even a darker brown/black color from Cayugas.
